Medieval betrothal ring- Fede ring

Description

The ring has two hands that meet in a handshake, a very old symbol of a promise. The ring confirmed betrothal, later engagement, and marriage. This type of ring is dated from Roman times but became common during the Middle Ages and onwards.

In English it is called the Fede ring, after the Italian phrase mani in fede or hands clasped in faith, or hands united in loyalty.
