Description

Nålbinding or Needle binding is a very old technique for producing small textile clothes, like gloves, socks, and caps. An archaeological finding from York, the so called Coppergate sock, was found in a Scandinavian context from the Viking age, and the technique has been in use continuously through the medieval period, renaissance, and into the modern time in certain places in Scandinavia. There is proof of the same Technique from Coptic Egypt, and from the Parancas and Nazca cultures in Peru. Medieval findings of Nalbinding, especially gloves, have been found in many medieval cities like Lund, Oslo, and Lödöse. A finding from newer times, previously believed to belong to migration era, is the Åsle-glove, from Västergötland, dated 1510-1640.
