Broadcloth is known since the 700s, became common in the 1300s and in the Middle Ages it was one of Europe’s most important commodities.
This fabric fits most garments like hoses, pants, kirtles, bodices, coats and doublés. Weaved in twill (2/1) and therefore extra suitable for hoses. During the Middle Ages the color was produced with large amounts of woad. From the late 1400s, imported indigo competed out the woad. Both plants contain the color indigo but the plant Indigo contains higher concentrations of the dye.
